The Rewind911 Podcast

The Rewind911 Podcast , hosted by Mark J. Fletcher, ENP, revisits some of my original articles, going back nearly a decade and a half. These included topics from industry predictions to major incidents and the hard-earned lessons from the evolution of E911, enterprise communications, VoIP, and Next Generation 911. Each episode will openly compare what we understood then about experiences, regulations, and evolving modern technologies, and then compare them to the lessons we've learned since. This is not just an ordinary journey through 911 history. Instead, it's an opportunity to identify the ideas that proved correct, the changes that took longer than expected, and the questions the industry still needs to answer. From location accuracy and outage reporting to cybersecurity, additional data, artificial intelligence, and resilient IP-based networks, the Rewind911 Podcast will connect the past with the decisions shaping the future of emergency services. Sometimes the clearest way to understand where 911 is going is to rewind and examine how we got here. Enjoy, and I welcome your comments along the way.

In the first installment of Rewind911, Mark J. Fletcher revisits his 2012 article that asked what would happen when Enhanced 911 finally met Voice over IP.
Using a highway crash as an example, Fletch explores how legacy 911 systems treated incoming calls as nearly identical events—and how NG911 introduces GIS-based routing, additional data, incident correlation, and greater network resiliency. The technology can help telecommunicators recognize patterns and connect callers with the right resources, but operational judgment still belongs to the human being.
The episode also examines which predictions proved accurate, why the nationwide transition took longer than expected, and how enterprise communications became part of the story. That includes the later impact of Kari’s Law and RAY BAUM’S Act on direct 911 dialing, notification, and dispatchable location.
E911 did meet VoIP, but it was never a single handshake. It has been an ongoing integration of technology, standards, legislation, policy, and people—and that work continues today.
